The Unique Applications Of Cotton Duck Cloth

Cotton duck is a plain woven, heavy material. It is a type of textile. It is usually made from the cotton fiber. Also known as duck cloth, it gets its name from the Dutch word ‘doek’, which means linen canvas.

Duck cloth finds its use in a wide range of industries, like home décor, apparel, healthcare, engineering, commercial and consumer goods. It can be found used in the manufacture of shoes, upholstery, rugs, slipcovers for furniture, mats, table cover, work clothes, yacht covers and sails, bags and shoes, and a variety of other things. One of the most versatile fabrics available, cotton duck is plain and very strong. The classic choice of color is unbleached white, but can also be dyed in blue, red, black, beige, ivory and green etc.

The cotton duck cloth portrays a number of properties that render it unique for special uses. It has been widely used to make pillow and cushion covers, bed sheets and covers, coats, hats, sand bags, sacks, tents and curtains etc.

The fabric is sometimes treated with chemicals to alter its properties. It acquires some new properties and becomes flame resistant, water repellent, mildew resistant and extremely durable. This makes it apt to be used in the manufacture of hammocks, aprons, teepees, tents, yurts and other outdoor applications.

Some of the other features exhibited by this fabric are:

•    Water absorbent
•    Prone to wear and tear when wet
•    Can be made organically
•    Inexpensive
•    Requires no special care
•    Comfortable to be worn in summers and rainy season
•    Convenient to dye, sew, wash
•    Dries faster
