The various types of fabrics that
we use in our day to day life are obtained from different sources. These can be
manmade or synthetic fabrics. The major difference between the two is that the
natural fabrics are made up of the yarn that is obtained from the plant and
animal sources. The most widely and commonly used among them is the cotton that
is derived from the cotton plant. Wool and leather are the popular materials
sourced from the animal fabrics.
Synthetic fibers are the polymers
of chemicals that are made in the laboratory. Here, ‘poly’ means many and ‘mer’
means units. So, polymers are the long chains of artificially made units of
chemical molecules
Examples are Nylon, Spandex and Lycra etc. There is a wide
variety of synthetic fabrics available in the market. Their properties can be altered and fabrics
with unique properties can be made. For example, the Duck Fabric can be treated with chemicals to give it properties
like flame resistant and water repellant. These are particularly useful for
making clothes and accessories that are required to provide safety from fire
and water, like aprons, kitchen mittens, medical gloves etc.
So, the different types of fabrics find
their application in various products like apparels, home décor etc. to make
our lives convenient and comfortable.
